A new study published on Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that men who took the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra, Pfizer’s generic version of the drug Viagra, could still suffer from erectile dysfunction. (Pfizer, via Reuters)
According to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, erectile dysfunction affects roughly 30 percent of men, with a greater percentage of those taking drugs that cause blood vessels to tighten. The results, from a study published last year in the journal, “Journal of Sexual Medicine,” found that men who took Viagra for more than six months experienced a 36 percent increase in their risk of developing heart attacks and strokes, compared with those who took the drug for a shorter duration.
Pfizer, which has been the world’s biggest drugmaker for the past 10 years, also said that the drug’s sales have increased by about 25 percent since its launch in 1998. The company, which is based in London, has a new drug in development for the erectile dysfunction treatment.
“We don’t know the impact of Viagra on men,” Dr. David Graham told Reuters in an interview. “We don’t know if it changes their sexual life or whether it’s the cause of some men’s problems. We don’t have any answers.”
Graham said that the results from the study were “a good first step in a long-term effort to figure out what we can do to improve the quality of life for these men.”
He added: “We’re trying to get men to take Viagra more seriously as they get older, and we’re hoping to get a better understanding of how Viagra works in their body.”
Dr. David Graham, an associate professor of urology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, said in a statement that the results “were important in highlighting the impact that Viagra has had on our patients.”
“These are men, and they’re going to need treatment to live normal lives,” Graham said. “It’s not a trivial matter, but if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.”
The Viagra study was led by the Viagra Editorial Board, which helped write the book about the research.

“Our research team has shown that Viagra does have some positive effects on erectile dysfunction and that it is generally well tolerated,” Graham said. “But the impact of Viagra on our health care system is not a straightforward scientific question, but we hope it will become the definitive answer to a broader health concern.”
Graham added that Viagra has been on the market since 1998 and that erectile dysfunction is treatable, but that it is important to note that there are other drugs available that treat the condition.
“There are a lot of other medications that are available to treat erectile dysfunction, including drugs that are FDA approved, such as the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, and other medications that are not,” Graham said. “We’re just not looking for the ‘other’ or the ‘best’ one.”

“If the results from the Viagra study are any indication, it should be in the context of the Viagra world,” Graham added. “In that world, you might find Viagra or the Pfizer drug Viagra available in pharmacies. But it’s not the case here.”
